What is Character

There are a variety of definitions to the word character such as “the attributes and features that make up and distinguish individuals.”  Definitions like this can be found in any common dictionary and are worthy of discussion.  However, the definition given to character by Character First is “The qualities built into an individual’s life that determine his or her response, regardless of circumstances.”  3D Character Chaplains believe that this definition gives clear guidance and understanding to build upon. 

Good character traits such as compassion, loyalty, honesty and dependability don’t just blossom in a person’s life.  They must be developed with intention.  3D Character Chaplains help individuals, businesses, schools and other organizations develop strong character.  This benefits the individual, the family, business and our culture.   

It has been widely reported that a character program can dramatically increase workplace production, profits, moral and decrease workers compensation costs.  When character training is applied to a larger setting such as a city or community the results are also impressive.  There can be a reduction in crime, lawsuits and other cultural problems.  At the same time quality character can help stimulate economic growth.  Building character has a positive impact on relationships of every kind.       

Chaplains use the Character First model and material to help develop character traits.  However, character chaplains have the unique ability to go beyond teaching and encouraging good character.  They are equipped to help a person overcome poor characteristics, behaviors and life challenges.  Chaplains are trained in spiritual matters, pastoral counseling, basic core health as well as character development.   

3D Character Chaplains also understand that character while important is not the answer to all of humanities problems.  Having a right relationship with the Lord Jesus is the solution.  Chaplains develop relationships through character training and offer additional ministry on an opt in basis.  In this way the chaplain can interact in any environment without religious conflict.
